Only four other baby pygmy hippos have been born in European zoos this year, and all of them have been female. With an estimated fewer than 3,000 pygmy hippos left in the wild, zoologists are doing their best to keep this rare male cub healthy to help ensure the continuation of the species.

I swear, you add the word “pygmy” to anything and it automatically becomes squee-inducing. This baby’s name is Kambiri (a Nigerian word that means “allow me to join this family”), and her plump little mud-covered body just makes me want to give her a big ol’ hug. Too bad pygmy hippos are endangered; she’s way cuter than any kitty I’ve ever owned.
